The Citroën Xsara Picasso is a five-door compact MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) manufactured by the French automaker, Citroën. A staple among families internationally, the Xsara Picasso is based on its predecessor, the Citroën Xsara. The original Xsara was a sedan-style family car, while the Citroën Xsara Picasso offers a flexible interior layout and more cargo space to accommodate larger families and travel. Highly anticipated after the success of the original Xsara, the Xsara Picasso has had a large following worldwide. Countries with a major production presence between 1999 and 2012 included France, Egypt, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Spain, and China. Its high popularity can be attributed to its practical design, spacious interior, and relatively low price for the amount of features that it came with. In fact, Auto Trader calls the Xsara Picasso the most popular MPV in the United Kingdom.
Famous auto designer Donato Coco modified the original Xsara design to create the Xsara Picasso’s design. The vehicle was ultimately named after Pablo Picasso because of a painting he created in the 1960s named “The Wreaths of Peace,” which features a Citroën DS prominently. The vehicle debuted in 1999, and was produced through 2010 and sold through 2012.
The first iteration of the Xsara Picasso came available in two trim levels: LX and SX, allowing users to choose between an economy family version or a premium, luxury version with added features. Other premium versions of the model included the Desire, the VTR, and the Exclusive. All included fold-down tables in the backseat, removable rear seats for more flexible configuration, and some included an electric glass sunroof.
The vehicle also came available in a choice of engines, all of which were four-cylinder, including the 1.6 and 1.8 L petrol engines and a 2.0 L HDI diesel engine. Later, a 1.6 HDI diesel engine was released, with added fuel efficiency to become part of the increased premium range.
In 2004, the Xsara Picasso received a facelift. Differences from the original Xsara Picasso included a new front and rear design, new color-coordinated painted bumpers, and new trim and detail, including sidestrips and inserts.
